Dubbed as the Bird's Nest, China National Stadium is located at the southern part of the Olympic Park in Beijing with an area of 21 hectares. The design was awarded to a submission from the Swiss architecture Jacques Herzog & de Meuron and a Chinese Architect, Li Xinggang in April 2003. The design, which was inspired by a study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a "Bird's nest". It is the world's largest steel structure and the most complex stadium ever constructed. It is "one of the key engineering marvels in the world today.
In Chinese mythology, the sun is represented by a circle and the moon by a square, reflected by the shape of the bird's nest and the Water Cube aquatic centre opposite, reinforced when the venues are lit at night, red for the Bird's Nest and blue for the Water Cube. The forms also echo the Chinese symbols for male and female, and are built either side of the north-south axis road which runs in a perfect straight line for three miles through Beijing, centered on the Forbidden City.
Construction of the National Stadium began on December 24, 2003, and was completed in March, 2008. The total cost was more than 423 million dollars, a tiny fraction of the 40 billion USD spent on Beijing in preparation for the Olympics.
The stadium is 330 meters (361 yards) long by 220 meters (241 yards) wide, and is 69.2 meters (227 feet) tall.It can accommodate 80,000 fixed seats and 11,000 temporary seats. Its appearance was formed by big steel frames. The top is covered by semi-transparent air bubble film. This kind of material is waterproof and can make enough sunshine penetrate into the stadium. Owing to that, the lawns in it can grow well. The framework of the National Stadium has been designed to stand for 100 years. Its fire resistance capability is first-rate, and it is able to withstand an eight-magnitude earthquake. The water-resistance capability of its underground project is also first-class.
The large steel skeleton of the project has the weight of 42,000 tons, with the roof and the hanging parts around it accounting for 11,200 tons. To bear such a heavy load, 78 supporting structures were temporarily installed and distributed in different points under stress, i.e. 24 supporting structures along the outer circle, 24 in the middle circle and 30 in the inner circle.
The eastern and western stands of Beijing National Stadium are higher than northern and southern stands, in order to provide better view for spectators. A 24-hour per day rainwater collector is located near the stadium; after water is purified, it is used throughout and around the stadium. Pipes placed under the playing surface gather heat in the winter to warm the stadium and coldness in the summer to cool the stadium.
The Bird's Nest was the main venue of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, when it had a capacity of 91,000 spectators. The stadium now has a capacity of 80,000, after temporary seating was removed.
